Khumalo suffers ankle injury

Khumalo: Out for two weeks

Defender Bongani Khumalo is set to miss Bafana Bafana's international friendly against Ghana at Soccer City on 11 August.

SuperSport United boss Gavin Hunt has revealed that the 23-year-old will miss Matsatsantsa's African Confederations Cup third round, second leg tie against Moroccan outfit FUS Rabat after sustaining an ankle injury.

Hunt says that the former Pretoria University star will also not recover in time for South Africa's first match under new boss Pitso Mosimane, as he will be sidelined for at least two weeks with ankle ligament damage.

Hunt told SAPA: "I need to get Khumalo fit for the Absa Premiership season which kicks off at the end of August when we play BidVest Wits away.

"I hope to have him ready for that clash (at Milpark on 28 August) but there is no chance he will travel with the squad to Rabat or be ready to play for Bafana against Ghana."

The news is also set to come as a blow to Khumalo's hopes of securing a move overseas to Tottenham Hotspur or Glasgow Rangers who are rumoured to be leading the chase for his signature.

But Hunt says that he is in the dark over a proposed move.

"As United's coach I am the last to know about player movements," he added.

"The game is now all about agents, but at this stage he is still contracted to United."

Hunt now only has 13 players for the trip to Morocco, after the injuries of Khumalo and Glen Salmon and his side will find it tough going as they look to capitalise on their 2-1 first leg advantage.

"If I had my full squad I would have murdered FUS home or away, but we go to Rabat on a wing and prayer. We'll do our best with 13 players," he concluded.
