But it was Thulani Serero who won it for Foppe de Haan's charges after the Birds had clawed their way back into the match via goals Giorgi Nergadze and Shaun Haschick.
Earlier in the match, in the 26th minute, Fanteni put the Urban Warriors in front with a neat finish after an excellent through pass from Khama Billiat.
Referee Victor Hlungwane made a big call ten minutes later when he awarded a penalty against the Soweto side after adjudging that Nergadze handled the ball in the area.
Bafana Bafana striker Fanteni stepped up and concerted the spot kick to make it 2-0, a scoreline Ajax were unable to hold for long.
In the 40th minute Nergadze atoned for his earlier error and directed his header from Keegan Ritchie's corner into the net to make the score 2-1.
Haschick found the equaliser round the hour mark with a powerful shot but in the 64th minute, Ajax found a third goal.
This time Fanteni was the provider for Serero, who swept in what turned out to be the winning goal.
There was more drama late on, however, as Thomas Cichon was given his marching orders in the 88th minute, the defender sent off by Hlungwane for collecting two yellow cards.
De Haan's men maintained their lead and notched up their second win in a row while Swallows remain winless.
