Da Gama backing Chenene

Da Gama: Best squad ever?

Da Gama: Best squad ever?

Bloemfontein Celtic coach Owen da Gama has expressed his delight at the capture of midfielder Bennet Chenene from Orlando Pirates.

The left-winger joined Phunya Sele Sele from the Soweto giants in a swap deal which saw Mark Mayambela go the other way.

Chenene was a regular under Da Gama's tutorship at the Buccaneers during the 2007/2008 season and the Celtic boss is relishing the chance to work with him again.

"I think he (Chenene) arrives tomorrow, but he has signed and everything is finalised and we are looking forward to welcoming him," he told Football365.co.za.

"He played regularly under me at Orlando Pirates and I am very, very glad to have him on board.

"You know I was very happy when it was said that we could sign him, I rate him highly and I think he will do wonders for Celtic this year."

Da Gama admitted Mayambela's move to Celtic was a loss to the club, but believes the capture of Chenene more than makes up for it.

"The departure of Mayambela is a loss, but sometimes movement happens within teams and sometimes you can't prevent it from happening," he continued.

"We are very happy to have Chenene on board."

The former Free State Stars mentor feels that his current squad is one of the strongest the club has ever boasted and is sure success is not far away.

"Look I think there is a superb team now at Celtic, a team that can really win things and go places," he added.

"We have assembled a very, very good squad and I think this is the best team in years that have Celtic have assembled, so I see a bright future for them."
